Segwit looks like it’s getting activated, what’s the roadmap looking like for future upgrades such as schnorr signatures?

Segwit itself is an upgrade but to my understanding it's key benefits is allowing additional upgrades. What might those other upgrades be, when might we see them, and how might we implement them (such as softfork or hardfork)?
